The Shepherd's Care

Sermon Notes: Psalm 23 - The Shepherd's Care

Introduction

Main Idea: Because God is our Shepherd, we can have unwavering confidence in His provision and protection, regardless of our circumstances.

Psalm 23:1 - "The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want."

  • "The Lord": Acknowledgment of God's Lordship from beginning (v.1) to end (v.6). David's constant trust in the Lord.

  • "My Shepherd": Deeply personal relationship. David, with all his highs (victories, kingship) and lows (loss, betrayal, sin), calls God his Shepherd.

  • "I shall not want": Not endless riches, but contentment and trust. Lacking nothing essential. Echoes Deuteronomy 2:7 (Israel lacked nothing).

Application Question:

  • How often do I live as if God isn't my Shepherd, worrying and striving instead of trusting?

  • What specific area of my life do I need to surrender to God's care and provision this week?

  • How does calling God, "Shepherd" change my view of him?

Provisions of the Shepherd

Psalm 23:2-3 - "He makes me lie down in green pastures..."

  • Green Pastures: Nourishment, (Exodus 3:21, 13:21, 15:13) God's provision for Israel (manna, quail, water)

  • Still Waters: Refreshment, peace, restoration of the soul.

  • Paths of Righteousness: Guidance, purpose. Aligning with God's will, bringing Him glory ("for his name's sake").

  • God is a good Shepherd, guiding Israel through ups and downs.

Application Questions:

  • Am I actively seeking God's guidance, or am I stubbornly forging my own path?

  • What "green pastures" and "still waters" (spiritual nourishment) am I neglecting? How can I prioritize them this week?

  • How can I ensure my actions and decisions are "for his name's sake" and not my own?

  • How has God guided you in the past like a shepherd?

The Reality of the Valley

Psalm 23:4 - "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death..."

  • The Reality of the Valley: Shepherd's care doesn't equal absence of difficulty. "Deep shadow," "total darkness" – times of loss, grief, despair. (Job, Israel's wilderness wanderings).

  • "I will fear no evil, for you are with me": Shepherd's presence is the antidote to fear. Not removal of the valley, but presence in it.

  • Rod and Staff: Protection (rod) and guidance (staff). The Holy Spirit's role (John 16:13).

Application Questions:

  • What "valley" am I currently walking through? How can I consciously invite God's presence into that situation?

  • How can I rely more on the Holy Spirit's guidance and protection this week, rather than my own strength?

  • How does knowing God is with me comfort me during dark times?

The Banquet

Psalm 23:5 - "You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies..."

  • Banquet Scene: God's provision and vindication, even amidst opposition. David's enemies (past and present) don't negate God's blessing.

  • Triumph over Adversity: God's blessings aren't contingent on the absence of suffering or enemies.

Application Questions:

  • Do I believe God can bless me even when I'm facing challenges or opposition? How does this belief affect my perspective?

  • What "enemies" (internal or external) are hindering my trust in God's provision? How can I surrender them to Him?

  • What current provision is God giving you right now, that you can thank him for?

Overflowing Blessings

Psalm 23:5b-6 - "...you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows...

  • Overflowing Blessings: Anointing with oil (honor, hospitality). Overflowing cup (abundance, lavish grace). David's confidence in the future based on past and present experiences.

  • God’s goodness and mercy will follow him all the days of his life.

  • I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Application Questions:

  • What specific blessings can I thank God for today? How can I cultivate a greater spirit of gratitude?

  • How does the promise of dwelling in God's presence forever impact how I live today?

  • How can you practically show gratitude this week?

Conclusion

  • Journey of Psalm 23: From green pastures to dark valleys, from shepherd's care to banquet table – a journey of trust, provision, and hope.

  • Commission: Embrace God as Shepherd. Relinquish anxiety, embrace guidance, live with gratitude. Walk in confidence, knowing His goodness and mercy follow us.
